7 Unforeseen Things That Determine The Size of Vet Bills

Sometimes it might seem like the size of the vet bill does not equal the amount of effort that was put into the animal.  While most times vets do provide a fair return on your investment, some vets seem to only care about padding or adding on to the bill, which isn’t right.  Here are some reasons why vet bills are high that you many not have thought of before.

1.  Building. While most vet clinics are older buildings, vets who build new state of the art clinics must pay for the mortgage somehow.  In order for you to bring your cat to a nice fully equipped vet clinic you must also help pay for the building.

2.  Benefits. All the veterinarians, front office staff, and vet techs all expect to be given certain benefits.  This can range from medical, dental, vision, and vacation.  The most expensive part of running a vet clinic is paying the staff.  Great staff is worth the pay, but if you have some bad techs it can be a waste of money.

3.  Equipment. New equipment must be paid for, like that new ultrasound machine your vet just got.  Generally in order to pay for this, only people who have an ultrasound performed on the pet help to pay for the cost.  Sometimes that cost is spread out over all fees, so there is a general increase in all fees.

4.  Continuing Education. If you want vets and techs who are up to date in their knowledge they need to attend and pay for continuing education.  In fact, in almost all states now this is a requirement.  This too adds to size of the vet bill, because you pay for this indirectly.

5.  Insurance. Liability, property, health, and sometimes even auto insurance must be paid for with money brought in from examining pets.

6.  Clients Who Don’t Pay. Clients who don’t pay their bills make it worse for the rest of us that do.  That money has to be made up somehow.

7.  Advertisement Costs. It costs money to advertise to bring in clients.  Advertising may take many forms, from yellow book ads, to radio commercials, to newspaper ads.

Summary

As you can see, there are many factors that go into deciding the cost of the vet bill that you probably are not aware of.
