Finding Low Cost Pet Care

Finding low cost pet care can be difficult but if you are resourceful enough you can find it.  Depending on where you live there might even be a lot of resource for you to take advantage of.  Here are some possible sources of low cost pet care and what to do if you can’t find anything.

One of the first places to look for low cost pet care or subsidized pet care is to contact your local animal shelter.  If you don’t know where an animal shelter is in your area, use the yellow pages or the Internet to find one.

Ask them if they know of a veterinarian that provides low cost veterinary care.  Odds are that they work with a veterinarian that is already providing low cost pet care.

Also keep an eye out for free pet clinics in your area.  Every once in a while there might a something like a rabies clinic or other public offering.  A pet shelter would also know of these as well.

Another great resource that people rarely take advantage of are veterinary schools.  Veterinary schools often offer reduced prices in an effort to allow their students to see more pets, same goes with vet tech schools.

Call them up and ask if they offer any cheap pet care.  If they don’t, ask if they know of anything in your area.  They will often know of what programs are available in your area.

If you can’t find anything then you are forced to try and deal with your veterinarian.

Remember that most vets are understanding of your situation, but many have been burned before by clients offering to pay later but never do.  They have ruined things for us.

If your vet does offer you reduced rates or a payment plan make sure you do everything to pay on time and for the full amount due.

If your vet can rely on you to pay what you owe, even if it is at a reduced rate, they will likely be even more willing in the future to help you out.

So if you need low cost pet care, start making some phone calls to local shelter and rescues now.
