8 Ways To Save Before Even Buying A Pet

This post is for people who are thinking about buying a pet, but even those people who have pets can benefit from this post.  Like almost everything in life, if you make a plan ahead of time, you will be far better off.  The same things go when buying a pet.  Here are 8 great tips to save you money before you even by a new pet…

1.  Find the right veterinarian. Find a good veterinarian before your pet gets sick.  Waiting until your pet gets sick is not the best time to start off a relationship with your vet.  You want your vet to view you as someone who like to prevent their pet from getting sick.  Also, you are more likely to get a discount the better your vet knows you!

2.  Get a healthy pet. While this one sounds obvious, many people buy sick puppies all the time.

3.  Get a pet that is already spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Why not save money and time by buying a pet that has already had its shots.  The best bonus of this is you don’t have to take time off from work to go to the vet clinic.

4.  Start a pet savings plan. Start saving some money every month to go towards any possible medical expenses.  This way you are not caught off guard in case of an emergency.

5.  Ask for a fee schedule up front and be sure to get an estimate from your vet. If you have any procedures done on your pet make sure you get an estimate.  This prevents a lot of misunderstandings.

6.  If you buy a pet from a breeder make sure you get a contract stating that the dog is indeed healthy. If you buy a pet from a breeder make sure you have a clause in the contract saying you can have it examined by a vet in 72 hours, and if the vet finds something wrong you get a refund.

7.  Beware of free pets. How many of us have accepted free pets and later regretted it because of pet expenses?  I think a lot of us can relate to this. Remember, there is no such thing as free.

8.  Avoid breeds that are prone to problems. Certain inbred dogs get more problems than others.  When choosing a dog breed research it, and make sure that in general that breed is healthy.
